Featured Dialogue: The Global Fund & Japan—20 Years of Partnership

Jiji Medical online, one of Japan’s top medical online news websites run by Jiji Press, featured a discussion highlighting the 20 years of contributions made by the Global Fund (GF) and Japan to the advancement of global health and the GF’s unique role in future pandemic preparedness and response (PPR).

The dialogue took place in mid-September between Dr. Osamu (Sam) Kunii, head of Strategy, Investment and Impact for the Global Fund, and Mr. Keiichi Hara, a board member for the Global Fund as well as deputy director-general for global issues at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ms. Satoko Itoh, assistant director of the Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ), facilitated the conversation.

The guest speakers reflected on the findings from the GF’s latest Results Report and the impact of COVID-19 on the GF’s fight against HIV, TB, and malaria. The discussion also addressed the strong partnership between the GF and Japan, their contributions over the past 20 years to the promotion of global health, and the GF’s roles in achieving the SDGs as well as in advancing Japan’s global health priorities, human security and universal health coverage.
