JCIE’s Noriyuki Ishiyama Chosen to Run in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay!

UPDATE: Due to the postponement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games until 2021, the Olympic Torch Relay has also been moved to Spring 2021. FGFJ and JCIE fully support the decision at this time as a crucial step to protect everyone’s health and safety. We look forward to bringing together “The Global Fund—From Okinawa” team early next year.

Noriyuki Ishiyama of the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) / Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ) has been selected as a torchbearer for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Noriyuki will be running on Saturday, May 2, in Okinawa Prefecture as one of nine members of “The Global Fund – from Okinawa” team.

In honor of the fact that the Global Fund concept was first proposed at the G8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit in 2000, an international team consisting of members who have been involved in the fight to end HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria will carry the Olympic torch through the streets of Okinawa.

Celebrating the achievements over the 20 years since the Summit, “The Global Fund – From Okinawa” relay team emphasizes the value of life, peace, and the importance of international solidarity in ending the epidemic of the three infectious diseases.
